Just under an hour’s drive from Calais finds us in Belgium, a beautiful country popular with visitors from the UK and none more so than the city of Bruges.  Linked to the sea by a series of canals and often referred to as “The Venice of the North” its history dates back to the 9th century and this medieval city is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  It is the perfect location for the stunning Christmas Market that takes place in the city centre each year. Soak up the festive atmosphere and visit the many stalls offering the chance to shop for unique Christmas gifts and enjoy sampling the amazing array of delicious local foods and drinks on offer.

Belgium is also further tied to the British people by the Great War and for four long years Flanders Fields was the scene which epitomised the horrors of this war. Four major battles were fought here and more than 250,000 soldiers from Britain and her Empire gave their lives.   Ypres lies at the heart of ‘the Salient’ and during the war the town was under almost constant bombardment, reducing it to ruins.  The city is now totally restored and at the heart of the city lies The Menin Gate, which marked the route that many soldiers took on their journey to the front line.

Join us on this tour for a tale of two cities, both famous but for very different reasons.

Below is a sample itinerary for a 2 day tour, all tours are personalised and once your tour is booked your expert guide will get in touch to start working with you to produce an itinerary for your bespoke tour.
Day 1:
Depart from your chosen pick-up point and head to Dover or Folkestone for your crossing. On arrival in Calais, we head to Belgium and the city of Bruges where the group will enjoy free time in the city and a visit to the Christmas Markets.
Day 2:
After breakfast this morning we will re-join our coach and make our way to the battlefields of Flanders. Our first stop is at Essex Farm Military Cemetery, the site of a dressing station, and pay our respects at a row of graves of soldiers that were killed on Christmas Day and also to Private Strudwick (age 15). It was close to here that John McCrae wrote ‘In Flanders Fields’. Heading into Messines we will visit the Christmas Truce Memorial and learn more about the story of the famous football match. Nearby lies Langemark German Cemetery which is one of the few German military cemeteries in Belgium, where you will learn of the student soldiers who died nearby in 1914 and of the Langemark myth to which the cemetery has given rise. Heading into Ypres we will enjoy a guided tour of the city, with our guide who will point out some of the key sites, ending a the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing. We end our day in Ypres with free time in this beautiful city before we had back to Calais.
