After the breakout from Normandy, the German forces held on stubbornly to the French and Belgian Channel ports. This forced the Allies to bring all supplies for their rapidly advancing armies from the artificial harbour they had constructed off the beaches of Normandy and from Cherbourg, which was far from ideal. Due to Antwerp’s port capacity, it became the immediate objective of the British 21st Army Group commanded by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery. While Antwerp fell to Montgomery on September 4, no supplies could be landed there until the German forces holding the lower reaches of the Scheldt, between Antwerp and the North Sea, were removed.

Four main operations were planned in order to gain free access to the Scheldt Estuary – firstly clearing the area north of Antwerp and securing access to the South Beveland peninsula, followed by Operations ‘Switchback’ and ‘Vitality’, which involved freeing the Breskens Pocket and the capture of the South Beveland peninsula, before the final Operation ‘Infatuate’, which involved the capture of Walcheren island, heavily fortified and a powerful German stronghold.

Join our tour to follow in the footsteps of the Allies as they battle to secure this section of the Atlantic Wall, which was considered to be among the ‘strongest’ concentration of defences the Nazis had ever constructed.

Below is a sample itinerary for a 3 day tour, all tours are personalised and once your tour is booked your expert guide will get in touch to start working with you to produce an itinerary for your bespoke tour.
Day 1:
An early pick-up, before collecting our guide enroute, we head for the channel and arrive in Calais later this morning. Getting a real feel for this battle and an excellent orientation of the estuary, we will visit various sites, including Maldegem, where we focus on Operation Switchback and the significance of the Bailey Bridge. Then onto the German bunkers at Groede, location of the German Regional HQ where we examine some of the defences and Atlantic Wall. Another view of the estuary awaits us at the Hoofdplaat before arriving at Hoogerheide, which was sadly involved in a friendly fire incident in the first phase of the battle.
Day 2:
Departing our hotel this morning we head to Uncle Beach, where we hear the story of the Commandos and the part they played, before heading to Liberty Bridge for a view of the Sherman Tank Memorial. RAF Bomber Command and the actions over Walcheren are commemorated at the Lancaster MKIII PB667 MG-Q Pathfinder Memorial erected in memory of an aircraft that crashed near this location. Our final stop today is at the Zeeland Liberation Museum, where the Battle of the Scheldt, this often-forgotten battle features prominently.
Day 3:
This morning we make our way to the CWCG Cemetery at Bergen Op Zoom, which contains over 1,200 burials many of which are casualties from the battles we have spent the previous two days following. After paying our respects we start the return journey to Calais for our return crossing.
